Newborn dies after 16-year-old gives birth in Ludhiana bathroom; Family alleges ambulance left baby behind

Chandigarh, Sep 19 (UNI) A newborn, birthed by a 16-year-old girl in a bathroom at the residential quarters near the Ludhiana court complex on Saturday, died. The girl's family and neighbour have alleged that an ambulance crew took the girl to hospital but left the baby behind.
The allegations against the ambulance staff have not been independently verified, and there was no immediate response from the emergency service or hospital authorities.
Sandeep Kumar, a neighbour who said he witnessed the incident, said the girl went to the bathroom at around 10 a.m. and cries were heard soon afterwards.
“When we went there and used a torch to look inside, she had already delivered the baby,” Kumar said. “I immediately called the 108 ambulance service.”
Kumar alleged that when the ambulance arrived, its staff took the girl to the maternity ward of Ludhiana Civil Hospital but did not take the newborn.
“The baby was wrapped in a cloth and left on a table,” he said.
According to Kumar, hospital staff later asked for the newborn to be brought in.
The baby was taken to the hospital at around 2:45 p.m., several hours after the delivery, but was declared dead.
“If the ambulance was already there, why was the newborn not taken to the hospital along with the mother?” Kumar asked.
The precise cause and time of the baby's death were not immediately known.
The girl's father, Ram Lakhan, a native of Hardoi in Uttar Pradesh, said his daughter was 16 and had left home about one-and-a-half years ago to live with a daily-wage worker from Rupnagar with whom, he said, she had entered into a relationship described by the family as a “love marriage”.
“I came to know only about 10 or 12 days ago that she was pregnant,” Lakhan said. “Today I received a call saying that she had delivered in a bathroom and the baby had died.”
Because the girl is a minor, any alleged sexual relationship involving her could attract provisions of India's Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, irrespective of claims about marriage or consent. The circumstances, however, remain subject to police investigation.
The father demanded action against the man who had been living with his daughter.
“My only demand is that police register a case against the person responsible for putting my minor daughter in this condition,” he said.
Kumar alleged that the man had left the girl after learning of her pregnancy.
The family has approached police with a complaint. Police were examining the circumstances surrounding the minor's pregnancy, the man's alleged role and the death of the newborn.
