UP: Food Safety Dept’s crackdown continues under ‘Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai’ campaign

Lucknow, Sep 19 (UNI) As part of the ‘Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai’ (Purity is Auspicious) campaign—aimed at providing safe, hygienic, and quality food products to consumers in Uttar Pradesh—the Food Safety and Drug Administration Department conducted special inspections against fast-food retail chains and restaurants in Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Noida.
During the inspections, on Friday, the food licences of 10 establishments were suspended due to violations of food safety standards and serious hygiene-related deficiencies. These include eight establishments in Lucknow and one each in Noida and Gorakhpur.
Officials here today said taking necessary action in accordance with regulations, the department suspended the licences and ordered the closure of these establishments. Improvement notices were issued regarding the shortcomings found in most units, with instructions to ensure necessary rectifications in line with prescribed standards. It is noteworthy that the department had previously taken major action in these three districts on Thursday as well.
During inspections in Lucknow, issues such as the presence of cockroaches, a lack of proper segregation between raw and cooked as well as vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items and extremely poor hygiene and sanitary conditions were found at Moti Mahal Restaurant in Lulu Mall. At Pizza Hut in Thakurganj, a risk of cross-contamination was identified because vegetarian and non-vegetarian food items were being cooked in the same oven. Similarly, at Champaran Meat in Vastu Khand, Gomti Nagar, inspectors found the storage of raw and semi-cooked meat together, foul odours, the storage of old/dirty oil, and extremely poor hygiene.
Meanwhile, at Club Jalwa in Vibhuti Khand, Gomti Nagar, unhygienic storage practices were observed, with chicken, fish, momos, and vegetables being stored alongside old, semi-cooked food items. Old cabbage and gravy, as well as poor sanitary conditions, were also noted at this location.
Additionally, at Madras Dosa in Fun Mall, issues such as extremely poor hygiene, pest infestation, and a risk of cross-contamination due to inadequate infrastructure were observed. At the kitchen of Bindass Bar in Summit Building, conditions were found to be extremely unsanitary, with dirty drains, uncovered dustbins and a clear need for deep cleaning. At Windies Burger in Aliganj, pre-cooked food items containing preservatives were being sold as ready-to-eat meals without providing clear information to consumers.
Meanwhile, at MR Eating Point in Lulu Mall, a risk of cross-contamination was identified because food processing was being carried out alongside repair and infrastructure work; food processing operations there were halted until the work was completed.
At Food Cage in Gorakhpur, cockroaches were found in the kitchen and processing areas, drains were completely blocked, and hygiene and sanitary conditions were extremely poor. Action was taken due to the potential for cross-contamination of food items arising from these conditions.
Separately, at F Bar & Lounge in Noida, rodent and pest infestations were detected alongside extremely poor hygiene and sanitary conditions; action was taken against the establishment due to the associated risk of cross-contamination.
In light of the serious irregularities revealed during the department's inspections, the food licences of all 10 establishments have been suspended. Necessary action is being taken in accordance with regulations to ensure compliance with food safety standards. Through this campaign, emphasis is being placed on ensuring that food business operators adhere to standards regarding cleanliness, safe storage, proper segregation of raw and cooked food, and the provision of accurate information to consumers.

Under the ‘Shuddh Hi Shubh Hai’ (Purity is Auspicious) campaign, the Food Safety Department’s focus extends beyond merely taking enforcement action; it also aims to provide Food Business Operators (FBOs) with the opportunity to make improvements in line with prescribed food safety standards.
