Govt raises MSP for Rabi crops including Wheat, Mustard, Masur, Gram

New Delhi, Sep 30 (UNI) The government has announced a fresh increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all six mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season.
The decision was approved by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The biggest increase has been announced for safflower, with its MSP rising by Rs 675 per quintal. Rapeseed and mustard will see the second-highest increase of Rs 413 per quintal, while the MSP for lentil (masur) has been raised by Rs 390 per quintal.
For other major Rabi crops, the MSP has been increased by Rs 136 per quintal for barley, Rs 83 for gram and Rs 25 for wheat. The government said the higher support prices are aimed at providing farmers with better returns and encouraging crop diversification.
The latest revision follows the government's policy of keeping MSP at least 1.5 times the all-India weighted average cost of production, a principle announced in the union Budget 2018-19. According to the government, the revised MSPs will provide returns ranging from 50% to 106% over the estimated cost of production.
Wheat will have the highest margin over its production cost at 106%, followed by rapeseed and mustard at 96% and lentil at 92%. The corresponding margins for gram, barley and safflower are estimated at 59%, 58% and 50%, respectively.
The government has increasingly used higher MSPs for pulses and oilseeds to encourage farmers to move beyond cereal cultivation and support crop diversification.
The Centre also highlighted the increase in government procurement and MSP payments over the years. Wheat procurement during 2014-15 to 2025-26 stood at 3,715 lakh tonnes (LMT), compared with 2,254 LMT during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
For all six Rabi crops combined, procurement increased to 3,921 LMT during 2014-15 to 2025-26, from 2,302 LMT in the preceding comparable period.
The amount paid as MSP to wheat farmers also increased substantially, reaching Rs 7.31 lakh crore during 2014-15 to 2025-26, compared with Rs 2.56 lakh crore during 2004-05 to 2013-14.
For farmers growing the six Rabi crops, total MSP payments rose to Rs 8.36 lakh crore during 2014-15 to 2025-26, against Rs 2.65 lakh crore in the earlier period.
