Sustainable packaging, circular economy key to boosting industry competitiveness: CII Telangana

Hyderabad, Oct 16 (UNI) The Indian packaging industry needs to accelerate the adoption of sustainable materials, circular economy practices and smart technologies to strengthen manufacturing efficiency, reduce costs and improve export competitiveness, industry leaders said at TG-PackCON 2026 in Hyderabad on Friday.
Organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Telangana, the conference brought together industry stakeholders, government representatives and regulators to discuss business opportunities and challenges in packaging, with a focus on sustainability, pharmaceutical and food safety, automation and global trade.
M. Goutham Reddy, Chairman of CII Telangana, said sustainable packaging had become a necessity as businesses faced growing expectations to reduce environmental impact while meeting changing consumer and industry requirements.
A. V. P. S. Chakravarthy, Chairman of TG-PackCON 2026 and Chairman and Managing Director of Ecobliss India Private Limited, said packaging should be viewed as a strategic driver of economic growth, manufacturing excellence and global trade.
He stressed the need to translate industry discussions into practical outcomes through advances in sustainable materials, circular packaging, pharmaceutical packaging standards and smart technologies.
R. P. Naidu, Regional Head of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), highlighted the role of packaging innovation in strengthening India's agricultural and processed food exports.
He encouraged businesses to explore APEDA support schemes covering export infrastructure, quality development and market access.
Dr Narendran, Deputy Drugs Controller (India) at the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), underlined the importance of packaging and labelling in maintaining pharmaceutical product quality and patient safety.
Compliance with regulatory requirements was essential to ensuring the identity, strength and purity of medicines, he said.
Gaurav Maheshwari, Vice-Chairman of CII Telangana, said the packaging industry needed to deliver better solutions using less material and energy while improving recyclability and meeting evolving consumer expectations.
The conference examined four key areas: policy and global trade; pharmaceutical and life sciences packaging; circular economy and sustainable materials; and smart technologies and automation.
Discussions covered export competitiveness, regulatory compliance, extended producer responsibility (EPR), design for recycling, sustainable materials, artificial intelligence and digital supply-chain solutions.
The deliberations highlighted the importance of collaboration among industry, government and regulatory institutions in developing packaging solutions that can support business growth while addressing environmental and safety requirements.
CII Telangana said the conference aimed to facilitate industry dialogue, knowledge-sharing and collaboration to support the growth and transformation of India's packaging sector.
