Hyd: Energy efficiency key to meeting rising power demand: Telangana Dy CM Bhatti

Hyderabad, Sept 16 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Wednesday said energy efficiency was crucial to meeting the state's rising power demand and called for reducing electricity consumption through efficient use of power.
Addressing the 25th CII Energy Efficiency Summit-2026 at HICC here, he said the unit of electricity saved through efficient consumption was cheaper than generating an additional unit.
“Energy efficiency should not be viewed merely as an environmental protection measure but as a strategy to enhance economic competitiveness,” he said.
Bhatti said energy policy had traditionally focused on increasing generation capacity, availability of coal, renewable energy and transmission infrastructure. However, energy efficiency could help meet rising demand without requiring additional land, coal mines, chimneys or transmission lines.
Efficient motors, advanced cooling systems, energy-efficient buildings, improved industrial processes and smart energy management systems could significantly reduce electricity consumption, he said.
With Telangana witnessing rapid economic growth, power demand would increase further due to expansion in industries, manufacturing, data centres, life sciences and electronics, he said.
“Slowing down development is not the solution. The solution lies in generating greater economic activity from every unit of electricity consumed,” the Deputy Chief Minister said.
Energy efficiency would help industries reduce operating costs and peak power demand, besides easing pressure on generation and transmission systems and strengthening energy security, he said.
Bhatti called for successful energy-efficiency technologies and practices to be replicated across industries.
“India does not lack successful pilot projects. The real challenge is to take a successful experiment from one factory and replicate it across 100 factories,” he said.
He said artificial intelligence, digitalisation, electrification, renewable energy and smart energy management systems would play an important role in improving energy efficiency.
Sensors could identify energy wastage, while digital systems could continuously optimise industrial processes. AI could identify patterns that may not be detected by human operators, he said.
Bhatti outlined three priorities for industries — continuous monitoring of energy consumption, creating mechanisms for sharing successful energy-saving practices and strengthening collaboration among government, financial institutions, educational institutions, technology organisations and industry to scale up commercially viable technologies.
The Deputy Chief Minister said Telangana offered an industry-friendly environment, highlighting its international airport, road network, Outer Ring Road, reliable power supply, skilled workforce and law-and-order situation.
“Investors are wealth creators. We welcome all wealth creators to Telangana to grow together,” he said.
Bhatti said Telangana had set a target of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047, and stressed the need for coordinated progress in industrial development, investments, infrastructure and the energy sector.
He said the state government was preparing to organise the Telangana Rising Global Summit on December 7, 8 and 9, and invited industry representatives and investors from across the world to participate.
He called for Telangana's development to be rapid, efficient and smart, with the objective of “generating more, developing more and reducing wastage.”
