Pawar calls for Tata legacy, statutory norms to be protected amid boardroom row

Mumbai, Sep 22 (UNI) Nationalist Congress Party (SP) chief Sharad Pawar has called for protecting the Tata Group's legacy and institutional autonomy amid the ongoing differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts, stressing that the issue should be resolved in accordance with statutory and corporate governance norms.
In a special public statement addressing the escalating friction, Pawar emphasized that the 66 percent ownership structure held by Tata Trusts is a deliberate design to ensure wealth generated from industry serves public welfare, funding vital sectors like healthcare, education, and rural development.
The dispute intensified following a Tata Sons board meeting at which N Chandrasekaran was reappointed as Executive Chairman for a fresh five-year term beginning February 2027. The resolution was approved by a 4-1 majority, with Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata opposing it and describing the decision as a legal nullity and a violation of the company's Articles of Association, which mandates the concurrent consensus of trust-nominated directors.
Pawar underlined that Maharashtra serves as the institutional heartbeat for major Tata-backed public foundations—including Tata Memorial Hospital, the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and warned that weakening the authority of the Trusts would directly endanger these vital national pillars.
Calling for a peaceful resolution, Pawar urged all stakeholders to respect the voting rights of representatives of the majority shareholder as provided under the applicable corporate governance framework.
He said issues concerning the leadership and functioning of the group should be addressed through dialogue and mutual understanding rather than confrontation.
