Indian nonprofits embrace GenAI faster than digital foundations: D4NP report

Hyderabad, Sep 25 (UNI) Six in 10 Indian nonprofits use generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) daily, but the sector's average digital maturity score stands at just 4.4 out of 10, according to the State of Nonprofits Digitization Report 2026 released by Digital for Nonprofits (D4NP).
The report assessed the digital maturity and technology adoption of 500 Indian nonprofits across 10 sectors and 20 digital maturity parameters.
It highlighted a significant gap between rapid GenAI adoption and the maturity of underlying digital infrastructure.
While 85 per cent of the nonprofits surveyed use multiple GenAI tools, only 25 per cent have assessed their impact or implemented safeguards to protect sensitive data, the report said.
Only one nonprofit assessed in the study has reached the advanced stage of digital maturity.
The report also identified gaps in the digital foundations of nonprofits. Around 10 per cent of nonprofit websites offer regional-language translation, while only 25 per cent have analytics capabilities to track website activity.
Social media adoption was significantly higher, with 81.6 per cent of organisations active on LinkedIn and 89.6 per cent on Instagram. However, only about one in 10 organisations have implemented tracking pixels to measure outcomes.
Digital fundraising also remains an area of opportunity. While 67.8 per cent of nonprofits nationally have functional online donation facilities, the figure falls to 30 per cent among Arts and Culture organisations.
The report estimates that about $5 million in Google Ad Grants remains unutilised every month based on the organisations assessed.
At the sector level, Environment organisations recorded the highest digital maturity, while Sports organisations recorded the lowest.
Nonprofits receiving structured digital support through D4NP programmes recorded a median digital maturity score of 6.3, compared with 4.4 across the overall cohort, the report said.
D4NP Founder Abhinav Chetan said the gap between GenAI adoption and digital maturity represented a significant opportunity for nonprofits.
The State of Nonprofits Digitization Report 2026 provides a benchmark of India's nonprofit digital ecosystem and identifies areas for strengthening digital capabilities, measurement, accessibility and responsible technology adoption.
