Bengal to recruit 4,000 Kolkata police personnel by December, announces Suvendu Adhikari

Kolkata, Oct 12 (UNI) West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday announced that 4,000 personnel would be recruited into the Kolkata Police by December.
He also said the Police Recruitment Board would issue a notification in November for the recruitment of 9,000 police personnel, while 650 Group C clerical posts would be filled through the Public Service Commission (PSC).
The announcements came at Netaji Indoor Stadium, where the Chief Minister handed over appointment letters to newly recruited police constables.
“The state police force will surpass Uttar Pradesh in personnel strength within the next two years,” the chief minister said.
He also addressed pending issues concerning dearness allowance (DA), the Seventh Pay Commission and Other Backwards Classes (OBC) reservation.
Criticising the previous Trinamool Congress government over its administrative decisions and legal complications surrounding recruitment, the Chief Minister said the appointments had been made possible following a change in government.
He alleged that the previous administration had created legal hurdles over the OBC list and insisted on defending its decisions.
“The state government has worked out a legal route through the Supreme Court to resolve the pending issues and expedite recruitment,” he added.
On civic volunteers, the Chief Minister said police stations should be staffed by properly trained constables rather than relying on civic volunteers to run their operations.

He added that the government had no hostility towards civic volunteers and had already increased their salaries by Rs 2,000.
He also promised that future recruitment would be conducted with complete transparency and without irregularities.
Earlier chief secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal said that indiscriminate recruitment of contractual workers in the past has led to a severe shortage of permanent posts in government departments today.
“During the tenure of the previous government, we saw contractual workers being recruited indiscriminately for almost every government job. Those workers themselves were uncertain whether they would still have their jobs the following morning. Naturally, such contractual employees lacked any long-term sense of commitment to their work,” Agarwal said.
Addressing state government employees' concerns over DA arrears, Adhikari said the gap between the DA paid by the Centre and the state had previously stood at 42 percentage points.
According to him, the current government had already cleared 20 percentage points of the gap, and employees would soon reach a DA level of 38 per cent.
The Chief Minister further promised to implement the recommendations of the Seventh Pay Commission promptly once the final report was received.
Calling on employees and job seekers to trust the government, Adhikari said vacancies would be filled in phases and pledged to address the grievances of those affected by delays in recruitment and other administrative decisions.
