Bengal CPI(M) leader Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya dares police to file 100 FIRs over remarks

Siliguri, Oct 12 (UNI) CPI(M) leader and senior advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya on Monday said he was prepared to face any number of FIRs over his remarks against Hindutva groups, adding that he would respond to police summons and give his explanation when required.
“Let a hundred FIRs be filed against me. I will respond to the police summons then and give a proper reply,” he said in Malda amid a controversy over cases registered against him for his remarks against Hindutva groups.
Addressing a joint Left Front rally in Malda town, Bhattacharya alleged that the deletion of nearly 5.5 lakh names from the electoral rolls in the district through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) was part of a political plan to influence the electoral process. He alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah were behind the move.
Bhattacharya said the deletions should not be viewed merely as a matter affecting Muslim voters, as poor and marginalised people, including Hindus, had also been affected. He alleged that the SIR exercise reflected an attempt to advance the BJP’s aim of turning India into a Hindu nation.
Referring to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, Bhattacharya described him as a “puppet” and alleged that the RSS was pulling the strings through Modi and Shah. The Left parties demanded Kumar’s resignation and called for the immediate restoration of all eligible voters’ names to the electoral rolls.
The rally was organised jointly by the CPI(M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc and other Left parties. Among those present were CPI(M) state leaders Jamir Mollah and Bhattacharya, former minister Subhas Naskar, Forward Bloc leader Swarup Deb, SUCI leader Santu Gupta and Malda district Left Front convenor, Kaushik Mishra.
The rally was followed by a protest march through the town, with Left leaders and workers raising slogans against the alleged deletion of voters’ names and demanding the Chief Election Commissioner’s resignation.
