Southern part of Northeast remains cut off for five days by surface road

Agartala, June 26 (UNI) Entire southern part of Northeast India, covering Tripura, Mizoram, Western Manipur, and South Assam, has remained cut off from the rest of the country in surface transport for five days due to a massive landslide on the railway and roads in separate locations of the Dima Hasao district on June 22 following heavy rainfall.

Besides passenger trains, including Rajdhani Express and Humsafar, goods trains were stranded in between, and a few are waiting in different stations of Assam and North Bengal.

The Tripura government has been closely monitoring the situation and exploring alternative options to ensure the stable supply of essential items to the market.

The massive landslides in the hill section of South Assam blocked the railway track in the New Haflong-Jatinga Lampur section. Along with the railway connectivity, surface transport through national highways has also been halted, as the iron bridge at the Bangharpar area of Barkhala under Cachar district in Assam has also collapsed.

The goods-carrying Lorries carrying essential items and perishable goods were stranded on the road for five days.

In view of the landslide that led to the disruption of train services in the Lumding-Badarpur hill section, continuous efforts are underway by the railways and state authorities for the early restoration of services.

Tripura Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said, “The state has sufficient food stock, but fuel stock is adequate till Friday. We’ve spoken to NFR officials, and restoration work is being carried out on a war footing. We are hopeful that services will resume soon.”
