Odisha CM orders administrative probe into Saradhabali Stampede, announces Rs 25 Lakh compensation

Bhubaneswar, June 29 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi today ordered a high-level administrative inquiry, headed by the Development Commissioner, into the stampede at Saradhabali near the Gundicha Temple in Puri, which claimed the lives of three devotees and left seven others injured.

In immediate administrative action, the Puri District Collector and Superintendent of Police were transferred. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Bishnu Pati and OSAP Commandant Ajay

Padhi were suspended for their roles in the incident.

Expressing deep sorrow and grief over the tragedy, the Chief Minister extended a personal apology and an apology on behalf of the state government to all Jagannath devotees.

He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced a compensation of Rs.25 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.

Majhi said that the Rath Yatra of Mahaprabhu Shri Jagannath in Puri is world-renowned, attracting lakhs of devotees who come with immense devotion and excitement to witness the divine darshan

of the Lord at Saradhabali.

“However, due to the overwhelming crowd and intense excitement, three devotees unfortunately lost their lives,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister reiterated that a thorough administrative inquiry has been ordered, to be conducted by the Development Commissioner.

Additionally, Chanchal Rana has been appointed as the new District Magistrate of Puri, while Pinak Mishra will take charge as the new Superintendent of Police.

DCP Bishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi have been placed under suspension for dereliction of duty.

Majhi asserted, “Mahaprabhu’s Rath Yatra is the pride and glory of our Odia heritage. Any form of negligence in managing this sacred event will not be tolerated. Exemplary action will be taken

against all those found responsible.”
