Manipur journalists suspend stir

Imphal, June 21 (UNI) Journalists of Manipur have suspended a stir of non-publication of government and security personnel related news from Saturday.
The decision was taken on Saturday by All Manipur Working Journalists' Union (AMWJU) and the Editors' Guild Manipur (EGM) during a general body meeting at Press Club.
A team of media persons going to Ukhrul on May 20 last to cover Shirui Lily Festival was stopped by personnel of 4 Mahar Regiment and demanded concealment of the words "Manipur State Transport" written on the vehicle of the Manipur Transport Department, Manipur.
The journalists protested and submitted a memorandum to Governor on the same day.
Journalists raised questions regarding freedom of the press, public safety and the existing security environment in the region, including the issue of who is governing the state: the State government or the Central Security Forces.
Media personnel called for clarity from the authorities regarding the rationale behind the instruction, especially given the state-backed nature of the journey.
All Manipur Working Journalists Union and Editors Guild Manipur also convened a meeting which decided to launch a Pen Down Strike on Wednesday and suspend all normal duties by the journalist fraternity.
It decided to stop publication of government and security personnel related news until action was taken.
Two government officials were assigned to enquire by the government and the report was submitted to Governor. However, the Governor has not yet acted on the report.
AMWJU and EGM urged the authorities to make the inquiry findings public and to take appropriate action to restore trust in governance and ensure the safety and dignity of journalists in the state. Until action is taken, all scribes will wear black ribbons.
