Assam CM visits site for proposed power plant in Dhubri

Guwahati, June 24 (UNI) Aligning with the state government's vision of meeting its power demand and achieving self-reliance in power generation, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited the proposed site for a thermal power plant in Dhubri district.
Chief Minister Sarma inspected the site at Chirakuta Charuwa Bakra in Bilasipara Co-District, which spans 3,300 bighas, 2 kathas and 15 lechas and assessed its viability as a potential location for the state's upcoming power generation project.
During the visit, he reviewed various aspects of the site and interacted with some of the residents settled in the area. He assured them of giving rehabilitation grants as per the provision of the government.
"A 3400 MW thermal power plant will be established at the proposed site, and a tender for the project will be floated shortly," he said.
He said the government will adequately compensate those from whom land would be taken for the power project. While those with land titles will get compensation and allotment of lands elsewhere, those without title lands will also be given compensation.
"Assam’s energy demand projected to rise significantly reaching an estimated 5,000 MW by 2030 and 7,000 MW by 2035, the state government is actively working to transform Assam into a regional hub for thermal power generation. If we need to procure these power requirement from outside, the cost will increase and it will be difficult to bear the cost," he said.
"In line with this objective, the State Cabinet, on May 5, 2025, approved the Assam Thermal Power Generation Project Promotion Policy 2025, aimed at attracting large-scale investments in the sector," he said adding that if the power plans happens in Dhubri, the whole area will change.
The Chief Minister stated that once the plant becomes operational, it is expected to create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities for local youth. He assured that those legally residing on the proposed site will be adequately compensated and rehabilitated. He also sought cooperation from the people to ensure the successful implementation of the project. UNI ANP SSP
