Bihar CM transfers Rs 579.23 Cr in flood relief to 8.27 lakh families

Patna, Sept 15 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary Tuesday enabled transfer of Rs 579.23 crore in ex-gratia relief to the bank accounts of 8,27,472 flood-affected families across the state through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) ahead of union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s proposed visit.
The relief amount is being provided at the rate of Rs 7,000 per affected family.
The amount was transferred in a programme during which Choudhary said that in the challenging flood situation, the state government’s highest priority was to provide immediate relief, assistance and security to affected families. “The government stands firmly with the flood-affected people with complete sensitivity. There will be no shortage in relief and rescue operations,” he said.
The Chief Minister said that 15 districts, 88 blocks, 575 gram panchayats and 2,642 villages, along with 136 wards across 21 towns, have been affected by the floods. Nearly five lakh hectares of land have been impacted, resulting in damage to crops.
He said relief and rescue operations were being carried out rapidly at all levels in the affected areas. More than 1,200 community kitchens are currently operating to provide food to flood victims. Around 1.28 crore meals have been served through these kitchens so far. Choudhary directed officials to ensure continuous availability of food, drinking water, medicines and other essential facilities in the affected areas.
He said 21 teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were continuously engaged in relief and rescue operations. Relief and assistance would continue until the situation returned to normal, he added.
Choudhary directed officials to ensure complete transparency in the identification and verification of eligible beneficiaries. If any eligible flood-affected family has been left out, it should be included in the relief list within a week, he said, stressing that no eligible family should be deprived of government assistance.
The Chief Minister also called for expediting recovery and reconstruction efforts alongside relief operations. He directed officials to follow the principle of “Build Back Better and Better Than Before”, with all recovery work to be completed within a month. The recovery measures will include agricultural input subsidies, road repairs and all necessary assistance to affected families and farmers.
Choudhary further directed officials to undertake a serious and sensitive assessment of the damage caused by the floods and ensure that affected families, farmers and others receive assistance promptly according to government norms.
In view of union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s proposed visit on Wednesday, the Chief Minister asked officials to keep a comprehensive and fact-based report on flood-related damage ready. He also called for proper documentation of the actual damage in affected areas so that necessary assistance and recovery measures could be prioritised.
He appreciated the coordinated efforts of various departments in providing relief to flood victims and said the government’s objective was not limited to immediate relief but also to restore flood-affected areas to normalcy quickly and ensure reconstruction with improvements.
During the programme, the Disaster Management Department Principal Secretary Santosh Kumar Mall made a detailed presentation before the Chief Minister on the flood-affected areas, ongoing rescue and relief operations, and the facilities being provided to affected people.
