Man held for stealing protected orchids from abandoned Assam Rifles complex in Aizawl

Aizawl, June 6 (UNI) A man has been arrested by Aizawl police for allegedly stealing rare and protected orchid species from the deserted Assam Rifles battalion headquarters complex in the city.
The accused, identified as Lalnghatzova (38) of Selesih, with a permanent address in Vervek village near the Manipur border, was produced before a district court on Thursday.
His arrest was made on Wednesday following a First Information Report lodged at Aizawl Police Station by noted environmentalist Vanramchhuangi, popularly known as Ruatfela Nu. Police also recovered several stolen orchids, including the endangered red vanda and blue vanda varieties, from his possession.
The red vanda orchid, locally called Senhri, holds special significance as Mizoram’s state flower and is classified as a protected species under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. Offences under this Act carry stringent penalties, and if convicted, Lalnghatzova could face a prison sentence ranging from three to seven years, along with a fine of Rs 25,000.
The case has sparked concern among local environmental groups. In a joint representation to the Chief Minister, the Centre for Environment and Social Justice (CESJ) Hmathlir Pawl (AHP) or Vision for Aizawl association, and the Association for Environmental Preservation (ASEP), have urged the state government to deploy security personnel to guard the abandoned military compound. They warned that the area has become a hotspot for drug addicts and petty thieves who exploit its derelict condition to commit crimes.
The now-deserted Assam Rifles complex, located in the heart of Aizawl, was once a bustling military hub before the battalion was relocated to Zokhawsang on the outskirts of the city. Since then, the compound has reportedly been left unguarded, making it vulnerable to theft and illegal activities.
Environmental activists have long raised concerns about the degradation of this area, especially given the presence of rare flora within its boundaries. The recent arrest has reignited calls for immediate protective measures to safeguard both the site and its natural heritage.
