Odisha Police intensifies ‘Daman’ campaign, executes 1,448 NBWs

Bhubaneswar, Oct 5 (UNI) Odisha Police has intensified its statewide ‘Daman’ campaign against criminals, narcotics and illicit liquor trade, executing 1,448 non-bailable warrants and initiating proceedings against 1,012 persons under Section 129 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) since the drive was launched on September 21.
The special campaign, launched under the direction of Director General of Police Binaytosh Mishra, involves coordinated operations by the district police, Commissionerate Police, Railway Police and other specialised police units.
Police sources said the campaign was aimed at maintaining peace and security during the upcoming festive season while taking firm action against illegal narcotics and liquor trade, organised crime and other anti-social activities.
As part of the anti-narcotics drive, police registered 89 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 109 persons. The operations led to the seizure of around 8.13 tonnes of ganja, while 19,387 ganja plants were destroyed. Police also seized 394.645 grams of brown sugar and 1,066 bottles of cough syrup.
In a major crackdown on violations of the Excise Act, 1,707 cases were registered and 140 persons arrested. The seizures included 10,298.24 litres of illicit country liquor, 2,922.409 litres of foreign liquor, 1,092.54 litres of Aska-40, 800 kg of poach and 81 litres of mahuli liquor.
Police also registered 46 cases relating to gambling and arrested 67 persons, recovering Rs 4,36,086 from the operations.
In cases relating to extortion, 16 cases were registered and 12 persons arrested, with Rs 10,520 seized.
The crackdown on illegal arms and explosives resulted in the registration of six cases and seizure of five guns, one revolver, four rounds of ammunition, one magazine, two empty cartridges, 2.5 kg of gunpowder and two swords.
Seven cases were registered against organised crime, leading to the arrest of 18 persons, police said.
As part of preventive policing, police conducted 1,830 blocking and border-sealing operations across the state. Inter-district and inter-state routes were subjected to intensified checking to monitor the movement of criminals and anti-social elements and prevent the smuggling of narcotics, liquor, arms and other contraband.
DGP Mishra said the police operations would continue in the coming days to maintain peace and public safety during the festive season. He said preventive policing and crime-control measures would be further strengthened to ensure a secure environment for citizens.
