Indranil, wife differ during face-to-face grilling, daughter skips summons

Kolkata, Nov 3 (UNI) Former West Bengal Minister Indranil Sen and his wife Madhuchhanda came up with conflicting versions during a face-to-face interrogation by Kolkata Police officers in connection with an alleged fraud involving the sale of Durga Puja tickets, sources said on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, their daughter, Averi Sen, failed to appear on Tuesday before the police, despite being summoned.
She has been directed to report to the city police headquarters Lalbazar at 2 pm on Wednesday.
Investigators at Lalbazar wish to question Averi, as funds from the alleged ticket scam were reportedly deposited into her bank account.
Police sources state that she has so far skipped two summons, citing health-related reasons. Should she fail to appear again, a fresh notice may be issued. The police are even considering the possibility of arresting her for playing truant.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had registered an ECIR (Enforcement Case Information Report) based on a case filed at the Bowbazar Police Station. Indranil failed to secure legal protection (interim relief) in this matter, leading to his arrest by the Kolkata Police.
Madhuchhanda, however, did secure such protection and has already appeared before the investigators twice.
According to Lalbazar sources, the couple was questioned over two consecutive days, including a face to face session, where they came up with conflicting responses to the investigators' questions.
Madhuchhanda claims that her role as a director in the firm 'Mass Art' was merely nominal and that she simply followed Indranil’s instructions.
She further alleged during the interrogation that these matters had even led to domestic discord between them.
A five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT), led by the Deputy Commissioner (Special) of the Detective Department, has been constituted to investigate the case. Four officers from the Fraud Prevention Wing of the Detective Department have been added to the team, increasing the strength of the SIT to nine.
A police official indicated that they are not convinced that Indranil is providing truthful answers during the ongoing interrogation. .

As UNESCO was yet to provide a response, a police official stated that a fresh application will be submitted to its Delhi office.
Notably, the ED alleged that fraudulent accounts across multiple entities were used to launder proceeds of corruption.
The central investigative agency had alleged a financial misappropriation amounting to Rs 100 crore, involving tenders within the Tourism Department — a claim that the Kolkata Police have now corroborated.
The police had previously identified 26 such accounts and have since discovered that funds were siphoned off through these accounts via the *hawala* (informal money transfer) system.
The First Information Report (FIR) filed in this case may be revised, with the potential inclusion of several sections under the West Bengal Maintenance of Public Order Act, sources claimed. It is understood that the police intend to approach the court regarding this on Wednesday or Thursday.
The fraud involved soliciting money from the public under the pretext of securing UNESCO-related credentials or 'Puja passes.' The Kolkata Police believe that these actions have disrupted public order.
