West Bengal Human Rights Commission admits CPI(M) complaint over attacks on book stalls during Durga Puja

Kolkata, Nov 2 (UNI) The West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) has admitted a complaint filed by the CPI(M) over alleged incidents of physical assaults, vandalism and arson targeting party book stalls and their staff during Durga Puja across the state.
In an order issued on Monday, Commission Chairperson Justice I.P. Mukerji directed that notices be served on the state Chief Secretary, Director General of Police and Kolkata Police Commissioner.
The notices, issued under Regulation 16 of the West Bengal Human Rights Commission Procedure (Regulation), 2015, will seek information only, with no report required at this stage.
The complaint was submitted through an email dated October 23 by CPI(M) state secretary Md. Salim, which was received by the Commission on October 27.
It alleged that people manning the party's book stalls were subjected to violence and that the police and administration had failed to prevent the incidents or take action against those responsible.
The party subsequently sought time until November 4 to submit relevant documents and records.
Admitting the complaint on the basis of a prima facie case, Justice Mukerji fixed the next hearing for November 6 at 3.30 pm.
The complainant and the notices may be represented under Regulation 38 of the Commission's rules.
