Centre to take concrete steps for relief, rehabilitation and compensation: Chouhan

Patna, Sep 16 (UNI) Assuring farmers and flood victims of standing firmly with them in the crisis, the union Agriculture, Farmers Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan today said the Centre would take all possible measures to provide relief, rehabilitation and compensation to people affected by the severe floods in Bihar.
Chouhan, who arrived in Bihar on the directions of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, conducted an extensive assessment of flood-affected areas along with Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, state ministers and senior officials from the Centre and the state government.
The union minister visited flood-hit areas in Vaishali, Munger and Bhagalpur, besides undertaking an aerial survey of affected areas.
He travelled by motorboat and country boat in Terasia and Saraipur villages of Raghopur block in Vaishali district and also used a tractor to inspect inundated residential areas and agricultural fields.
He observed the flood situation from the Raghopur six-lane bridge.
Speaking to the media after the field inspection, Chouhan said the water level in the affected area had risen about one foot higher than during the 2016 floods.
He said banana and maize crops had been submerged for more than 10 days and were severely damaged.
According to him, around 50 lakh people across Bihar had been directly affected by the floods, with people forced to leave their homes and suffering damage to houses, crops and livestock.
"It is extremely painful to see the hard-earned crops of farmers submerged in floodwater," Chouhan said, adding that farmers should not lose hope and that the government was committed to protecting their livelihoods.
The union minister said the state government was undertaking immediate relief measures through its State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and other resources.
The state has begun providing immediate assistance of Rs 7,000 per affected family, he said.
Chouhan said a detailed Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) would be sent to Bihar to assess the extent of damage across affected districts.
The assessment would cover crops, roads, bridges, houses and livestock, among other areas.
He said the Centre would provide financial and material assistance in accordance with the formal proposal submitted by the state government under the applicable disaster-relief framework.
Chouhan said the state administration, under Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, was working round the clock on relief and rescue operations.
Medical teams, including doctors and paramedical personnel, were being sent by boat to affected areas, while arrangements had been made for shelter, drinking water, dry rations and cooked food for affected families, he said.
The minister assured flood victims that the Centre and the state government would work together to help people recover from the crisis and that measures would be taken for rehabilitation and restoration of damaged infrastructure.
Chouhan also inspected a relief camp at Nawagarhi and the Kojikeraia embankment in Munger, where he reviewed safety and water-drainage arrangements.
In Bhagalpur, he visited relief camps and interacted with people taking shelter there.
After visiting the flood-affected areas and relief camps during the day, Chouhan is scheduled to chair a high-level review meeting at the Chief Minister''s residence on Aney Marg later in the evening.
Senior officials from central and state departments would also attend the meeting, where relief distribution, healthcare services, crop compensation and restoration of damaged infrastructure would be reviewed. UNI RS SAS
