Bengal: IIT Kharagpur to mentor Tripura’s higher education overhaul

Midnapore, Oct 29 (UNI) IIT Kharagpur has joined hands with the Tripura government to overhaul the state’s higher education landscape, with a proposed Centre for Advanced Learning, Research and Innovation, AI-enabled teaching and industry-linked skill development at the heart of the initiative.
A Letter of Intent signed on Thursday between IIT Kharagpur and the Tripura government’s Higher Education Department envisages a five-year roadmap to strengthen universities and government degree colleges, expand research and entrepreneurship, and improve graduates’ employability. The collaboration seeks to bring the technological expertise and research capabilities of one of the country’s premier engineering institutions to the higher education system of the northeastern state.
The proposed Centre for Advanced Learning, Research and Innovation (CALRI) will serve as the flagship of the partnership, with IIT Kharagpur providing academic guidance and technical mentorship. The centre is expected to promote multidisciplinary research, emerging technologies, digital education, innovation and startup incubation, with a focus on Tripura’s developmental needs.
The agreement also envisages structured mentoring for Tripura Technical University, including curriculum modernisation, faculty development, laboratory infrastructure, research capacity, accreditation and institutional governance. Government general degree colleges across the state are expected to benefit from vocational education, practical training, industry-aligned skill programmes and entrepreneurship initiatives.
The thrust is to bridge the gap between academic qualifications and employment opportunities, while encouraging young people to move beyond conventional job-seeking towards self-employment and enterprise creation.
Addressing the signing ceremony, IIT Kharagpur director Prof. Suman Chakraborty said the objective was to extend the benefits of academic excellence, advanced research and technological innovation beyond the institute’s institutional boundaries. He emphasised the need to connect education with real-world challenges and create an ecosystem in which young people could become job creators.
Tripura higher education minister Kishor Barman described the partnership as an important step towards improving the quality and relevance of higher education in the state. He said the collaboration would help strengthen institutions, equip faculty and students with advanced capabilities, and translate education into employment, entrepreneurship and social progress.
The partnership will also explore joint research projects, technology transfer, consultancy, industry-sponsored initiatives and startup incubation. Research opportunities are expected to draw on Tripura’s economic strengths in bamboo, natural rubber, tea, agriculture and natural gas, with the aim of developing locally relevant technologies and new enterprise opportunities.
A joint steering committee, supported by designated nodal officers, is proposed to coordinate the initiative. A detailed project report covering infrastructure, academic programmes, research priorities, funding requirements, implementation milestones and measurable outcomes will be prepared for a five-year period.
Funding may be pursued through central government ministries and agencies, including the union education ministry, the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, the North Eastern Council, the Anusandhan National Research Foundation and the departments of science and technology and electronics and information technology, subject to applicable approvals.
The collaboration is expected to provide a model for extending institutional expertise to underserved regions, while positioning Tripura to strengthen its research base, develop industry-ready skills and build a more innovation-driven economy.
