YMA, AIDS control body join forces to tackle HIV and drug menace in Mizoram

Aizawl, May 25 (UNI) In a significant push against HIV spread and drug abuse, the Young Mizo Association (YMA) central committee — the largest community-based organisation among Mizos — and the Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS) have pledged to work closely together to address the twin challenges threatening the state.
At a consultative meeting held at the central YMA hall in Aizawl, MSACS project Director Dr Jane R. Ralte revealed alarming figures: since October 1990, Mizoram has recorded 32,544 HIV infections, with 2,021 new cases reported in the 2024–2025 fiscal year alone.
Dr Ralte noted that of these recent cases, a staggering 68.13 percent (1,302 cases) were transmitted through unsafe sex, with most infections occurring among those with permanent partners — husbands, wives, or steady lovers — followed by individuals with casual partners. She also flagged a worrying rise in infections among males who have male sexual partners.
She highlighted that 83.47 percent of the new cases were among those aged 15–49, stressing the urgent need to promote condom use. “We appeal to the YMA to educate the youth to always carry condoms,” she said.
Central YMA President Lalhmachhuana remarked that the fight against HIV should not only focus on drug addicts but also sections of society with wealth and social standing who are equally vulnerable and capable of spreading the infection. He proposed that YMA leaders and MSACS officials form special teams to observe and study nightlife behaviours on the streets.
The meeting also addressed the benefits of Oral Substitution Therapy (OST) over intravenous drug use (IDU) and underscored the importance of strengthening coordination between the central YMA and its local units in managing ‘drop-in centres.’ It was agreed that these centres should be actively used to educate people on the dangers of HIV and promote drug de-addiction efforts across the state.
