MRUTTIKA-2026: Odisha reaffirms commitment to empowering terracotta ,pottery artisans

Bhubaneswar, Oct 31 (UNI) The Odisha government has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting the growth and economic prosperity of artisans engaged in terracotta and pottery crafts, Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Minister Pradip Bal Samanta said on Saturday.
Inaugurating the six-day annual state-level terracotta and pottery exhibition, ‘MRUTTIKA-2026’, the Minister said terracotta and pottery were integral to Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and traditional handicraft legacy. He emphasised the need to provide artisans with greater opportunities to showcase their skills, expand their businesses and improve their livelihoods.
The exhibition has brought together around 380 artisans from 26 districts of Odisha, providing them with a common platform to display their traditional craftsmanship, connect with customers and explore new business opportunities.
The Minister said the state government had provided free stalls to all participating artisans and extended financial assistance towards their travel expenses, daily allowances and transportation of products to the exhibition venue.
During his visit, Samanta interacted with the participating artisans and enquired about their welfare, working conditions and business experiences.
Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Department, Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, said the primary objective of the exhibition was to bring a wide range of terracotta and pottery products under one roof and provide artisans with a common commercial platform.
She said the initiative was aimed at expanding market access, promoting traditional craftsmanship and creating better income-generating opportunities for artisans.
Organised by the Department of Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts ahead of Diwali, the exhibition will continue until November 6. A total of 218 stalls have been set up this year, with business turnover exceeding Rs 3 crore expected during the six-day event.
A special theme pavilion has also been created to showcase the journey and evolution of terracotta handicrafts, highlighting the traditional skills, artistic creativity and craftsmanship associated with this age-old art form.
More than 44,000 artisans across Odisha depend on terracotta and pottery crafts for their livelihood. Among the 64 handicrafts recognised by the state government, terracotta and pottery occupy a significant position in the state's traditional artistic heritage.
The annual exhibition is expected to provide a major boost to the sector by connecting traditional artisans with wider markets while helping preserve and promote Odisha's rich terracotta and pottery traditions.
