Bengal BJP leaders urge people to buy earthen lamps this Diwali, potters hope for better sales

Hooghly, Oct 29 (UNI) With Diwali approaching, district leaders of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have urged people to use traditional earthen lamps, highlighting their cultural and religious significance and the need to support local potters.
Serampore MLA and Minister of West Bengal Bhaskar Bhattacharya said the appeal was in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Vocal for Local’ and ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaigns. He said people were being encouraged to buy clay lamps made by local potters instead of mass-produced alternatives, so that festive spending could benefit small-scale artisans in rural and semi-urban areas.
Surendar Singh, a potter from Serampore, said the growing popularity of Chinese-made miniature lamps resembling burning diyas had earlier affected the market for traditional earthen lamps.
“Our sales fell sharply, and we suffered losses even during the festive season. Now, BJP leaders and workers are encouraging people to use earthen lamps to preserve traditional rituals. We are happy that demand has increased and hope this Diwali will bring us better earnings and profits,” he said.
Swami Mahadevananda of Bharat Sevashram Sangha said diyas had become a cultural and spiritual link for Indians living abroad, with homes, temples and community centres across the world lighting them during Diwali. He said the lamps symbolised hope, the triumph of good over evil and the preservation of cultural traditions.
The spiritual significance of lighting a diya also lies in its association with inner enlightenment. As emphasised by Shri Kripalu Ji Maharaj, darkness represents maya, or material illusion, and ignorance, while the flame symbolises divine wisdom and God-consciousness. The light of devotion and knowledge, according to this philosophy, dispels the darkness of ignorance.
In Sanatan Dharma, an earthen lamp is also associated with the five elements of creation — earth, water, fire, air and space — reflecting the spiritual significance attached to the ritual.
