Mizoram calls for strategic roads, durable highways at national infrastructure meet

Aizawl, June 20 (UNI) In a strong push for durable and strategic infrastructure in India’s remote Northeast, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday made a compelling case for
reimagining national highways in the region—not just as roads, but as lifelines for development
and national security.
Speaking at the 233rd Mid Term Council Meeting of the Indian Road Congress (IRC), held at the Mizoram University Auditorium here, the Chief Minister urged the Centre to prioritise border states like Mizoram in road planning.
He advocated for the adoption of rigid pavement technology—a more durable road construction method suited for hilly terrain and heavy rainfall—and called for highways in the state to be treated
as strategic roads, given Mizoram’s sensitive international borders.
“In a state with just one airport and a single railway line, roads are not just infrastructure—they are our arteries of survival and growth,” Lalduhoma said, pointing out that Mizoram’s road density
stands at a mere 46.37 km per 100 sq. km, significantly below the national average of 116 km.
Highlighting the rapidly rising demand for road connectivity in both towns and remote villages, the Chief Minister said the state’s topography and weather made rigid pavement a more sustainable choice, despite higher upfront costs.
“It ensures durability and reduces long-term maintenance, which is essential for us,” he said.
He also raised concerns about unscientific construction practices, particularly the improper disposal of excavated earth, which has caused environmental damage and agricultural loss in various parts of the state.
Lalduhoma urged road engineers to adopt better planning, avoid unnecessary curves, and construct proper drainage and culverts to enhance road longevity and safety.
“Let us stop building roads that need rebuilding in just a few years. Let us build them to last,” he said.
The Chief Minister also thanked the Indian Road Congress for bringing the prestigious national event to Mizoram and expressed hope that it would result in fruitful deliberations and long-term improvements in road policy for the Northeast.
Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways and Corporate Affairs Harsh Malhotra, who attended the event as Guest of Honour, described Mizoram as a “picturesque and hospitable state” and praised Lalduhoma’s vision.
He reaffirmed the Centre’s support for infrastructure development in the Northeast, especially in border regions.
“Good roads are essential for trade and prosperity. We will ensure that states like Mizoram get the attention they deserve,” Malhotra said, adding that the proposal for rigid pavement technology
would be looked at positively.
The event also featured addresses by Mizoram PWD Minister Pu Vanlalhlana, IRC President Prof. Manoranjan Parida, IRC Secretary General Rahul Gupta, and others.
K. Lalthawmmawia, Secretary, PWD Mizoram and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, delivered the welcome address.
Founded in 1934, the Indian Road Congress is India’s apex body for road engineering and policy-making. It plays a pivotal role in setting standards for the planning, design, and maintenance of
roads, bridges, and tunnels across the country.
This marks the fourth time Mizoram has hosted the IRC Mid Term Council Meeting—a reflection of the region’s growing relevance in India’s infrastructure development agenda.
