BJP fact finding team visits law college and meets Kolkata police commissioner

Kolkata, June 30 (UNI) A four-member BJP fact-finding team today met the Kolkata police commissioner Manoj Verma and visited the South Kolkata law college - the spot of the alleged brutal rape of a female student last week.

The fact-finding team comprises former Mumbai Police Commissioner and ex-Union Minister Satyapal Singh, another former Union Minister Meenakshi Lekhi, former Tripura Chief Minister and MP Biplab Deb, and Manan Kumar Mishra

Speaking to reporters at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Deb said, "Despite being run by a woman chief minister, West Bengal is witnessing one ghastly incident after another in colleges and medical colleges in the state.”

Later in the day state BJP president Sukanata Majumdar accompanied the team straight to Lalbazar, the headquarters of the Kolkata Police. After 3 PM, a meeting began between Commissioner Verma and the representatives of the team sent by BJP national president J P Nadda.

The Union Minister of State for Education interacted with the media after completing the meeting at 3.50 pm. “I told the Police Commissioner that these colleges fall within your jurisdiction. It is your responsibility to prevent the movement of outsiders in these institutions.”

“The Police Commissioner assured us that the arrested individuals will definitely be punished. The evidence collected from the scene and the medico-legal examination already conducted are sufficient to prove the accused guilty of the gangrape,” Majumdar added.

After the meeting with the Commissioner, the BJP leaders went to Kasba Law College. But before entering, they were initially obstructed by the police. A crowd of BJP youth wing members had gathered in front of the college. A large police force was deployed at the entrance of the college, and barricades were set up.

In the midst of all this, Sukanta and the members of the fact-finding team arrived. There was a 15-minute altercation between them and the police officials but eventually the BJP leaders and the delegation team were allowed to enter.

Speaking to the media after visiting the college Satya Pal Singh said, “This is not the first time but this kind of institutionalised crime happened just ten months before at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. We can notice a pattern in the whole thing. We want to ask who is responsible for all these things. Is it an administrative failure or the government is responsible for all these?”

“When we spoke with the vice principal of the college, we came to know that the the main accused had a criminal history dating back to 2013 and had already been arrested four times. This raises serious questions: Who gave him employment at the institution, and how was someone with such a record allowed continued access to students? These issues point to a systemic breakdown that must be addressed urgently,” Singh said.

“What makes it even more unfortunate is that these repeated atrocities against women are happening under the leadership of a woman chief minister. It is a deeply sorry state of affairs when women continue to face such brutal violence with little deterrence in place,” Deb added. UNI XC SSP
