Two PILs filed in Cal HC in alleged gang rape of law college student

Kolkata, June 30 (UNI) A set of PILs was filed today in the Calcutta High Court in relation to the alleged

gang rape of a woman student within the premises of a law college in south Kolkata on June 25, court sources

said.

The Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed separately by one citizen, Vijay Singhal, and advocate

Soumya Shuvra Roy in the division bench headed by Soumen Sen seeking an urgent hearing on the

matter, which has rocked the state, both politically and socially.

The court admitted both the PILs and the hearing is expected this week, sources said.

In one of the petitions, the litigant demanded the appointment of a retired judge to head the recently

constituted five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Police to probe the gang rape.

The Kolkata Police (KP) set up a five-member SIT to probe the alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old student, a first-year student of South Calcutta Law College, at Kasba in the southern part of the city on Wednesday late evening. She was allegedly sexually assaulted in a security guard’s room on the ground-floor of the college campus.

A former student, who also works as a contractual service in the college, and two other students, were arrested on the basis of a complaint lodged by the victim. The Police also arrested a security guard, in this connection.
