River levels recede, yet normal life remains affected in Manipur

Imphal, June 10 (UNI) Water levels of all major rivers flowing in Manipur have receded to normal, leaving behind in their trail vast swathes of slushy plains, such as in Imphal East. Hospitals, including the main referral hospital, the JNIMS, have been closed down and it will take some time to restore normal health care.
Fire brigade personnel and medical staff have been cleaning the hospital premises so that patients and staff can stay. However, there is fear of waterborne diseases and bad air affecting the health of patients. In many areas of Imphal East, water is yet to be drained out. Volunteers working in the flood-affected areas said drainage system has failed in many places due to blockage by plastics and wastage.
The flood situation was managed by joint teams of officials and local volunteers. Thousands continue to stay in relief camps. There is an acute shortage of safe drinking water and essential commodities due to landslides. Repair works at the national highway continue and some vehicles are directed to different routes to ensure free flow of goods.
