CM Majhi urges people to keep Odisha coastline clean for sustainable Blue Economy

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19 (UNI) Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Saturday appealed to the people to keep the state’s coastline clean and oceans healthy to protect coastal livelihoods, marine ecosystems and build a thriving Blue Economy.
In a message on International Coastal Cleanup Day, Majhi said Odisha’s coastline was much more than a stretch of sand and sea, as it remained an integral part of the state’s identity, heritage and way of life.
“From the sacred shores of Puri to Gopalpur, from the mangroves of Bhitarkanika to the nesting grounds of Olive Ridley turtles, our coast carries stories, traditions and memories passed down through generations,” he said.
“For us in Odisha, the ocean is not merely Samudra; it is an inseparable part of our Sanskriti. The Mahodadhi, which stands witness to the sacred land of Lord Jagannath, reflects our timeless bond with nature, faith and our way of life,” the Chief Minister said.
Majhi said the story of Odisha’s coast was also the story of its people, as generations of coastal communities, including fishers, boatmen, farmers, women, youth and countless families, had lived alongside the Mahodadhi.
“Protecting our coast is therefore not merely about preserving our shores; it is about safeguarding livelihoods, marine ecosystems and the future of our Blue Economy,” he said.
The Chief Minister said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of a cleaner and more sustainable India, powered by Jan Bhagidari, had given renewed momentum to collective efforts for environmental protection.
Under the leadership of union Minister Jitendra Singh and the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the “Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar” campaign was carrying the vision forward by bringing citizens, youth and coastal communities together to protect the shores and safeguard the oceans, he said.
On International Coastal Cleanup Day, Majhi called upon people to turn their deep connection with the sea into a shared responsibility.
“Let every hand that removes waste from our shores become a hand that protects a livelihood, and every clean beach a promise to our children,” he said.
