Tripura HC mandates enhancement of CCTV coverage in police stations

Agartala, Sep 19 (UNI) The Tripura High Court has recently mandated the further enhancement of coverage of CCTV cameras in all police stations and outposts throughout the state.
This decision, announced by a division bench led by Chief Justice M S Ramachandra Rao and Justice Biswajit Palit, was referred to the Supreme Court case Parambir Singh v. Baljit Singh, which addressed detainee safety in police custody.
The directive originated from a petition by Saikat Saha of the city, who reported sexual assault and physical abuse at the East Agartala police station. The bench examined CCTV footage from this facility, where Saikat Saha was mistreated due to a false complaint made by the Agartala Municipal Corporation.
The court also pointed out a similar incident at the Airport police station, criticizing the absence of CCTV documentation as a serious breach of established rules and detainee safety. In line with the Supreme Court's precedent in the Parambir Singh case, the bench required comprehensive CCTV coverage in police stations.
This includes entrances, exits, detention areas, corridors, reception zones, administrative offices, restrooms, and perimeter zones. Each station's commanding officer must now ensure all surveillance equipment functions properly and is well-maintained.
Civil rights organizations and citizen-led groups have welcomed the judgment, while the police authority has expressed its intention to comply with the order but refrained from further comments.
