Mizoram on alert as officials brace for possible Covid resurgence

Aizawl, May 25 (UNI) Even as Mizoram remains calm, the state’s Health and Family Welfare Department has begun quietly preparing for possible challenges amid reports of a fresh Covid-19 wave in some countries and parts of India, officials from the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) said on Sunday.
State IDSP nodal officer Dr Vanlalrengpuia Chinzah said that although the central government has yet to issue formal directives, the Department has received both official and informal updates regarding the spread of a new COVID-19 variant, including reports of two fatalities within India.
“We have not yet been officially instructed on what preventive or surveillance measures to adopt, but we are already considering our course of action and preparations even without categorical instructions from the Centre,” Chinzah explained.
He added that the Department is prepared to implement screening of incoming passengers from affected states or countries, as well as at inter-state entry points, should the situation warrant it.
Mizoram was hit hard by the Covid-19 pandemic between 2020 and early 2023, recording 734 deaths — roughly 0.3 percent of the 2,39,328 infections reported since the state’s first case on March 24, 2020. By May 2023, health officials had declared the pandemic effectively contained.
Nearly 20 lakh samples were tested in the state throughout the pandemic, with an impressive recovery rate of 99.68 percent. The worst phase came in 2021, when the deadly Delta variant swept through Mizoram, claiming 537 lives, but the situation improved significantly by mid-2022 following the arrival of the milder Omicron variant.
