Bihar CM pays tribute to captain Lakshmi Sahgal on her birth anniversary

Patna, Oct 24 (UNI) Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary on Saturday paid tribute to Captain Lakshmi Sahgal on her birth anniversary, describing the freedom fighter as a symbol of indomitable courage, sacrifice and patriotism.
Choudhary said Sahgal's life and her commitment to the nation's freedom continued to inspire generations.
He described her contribution to India's independence movement as exemplary and said her dedication to the country would always be remembered with respect.
Born as Lakshmi Swaminathan in Madras, now Chennai, on October 24, 1914, Sahgal studied medicine at Madras Medical College and began her career as a doctor. She later moved to Singapore, where she provided medical assistance to members of the Indian community.
During her stay in Singapore, she became a part of the Indian independence movement and joined the Indian National Army (INA) under the leadership of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Sahgal played a key role in the formation of the INA's Rani of Jhansi Regiment, an all-women military unit, and served as its commander. The regiment became a landmark in the history of women''s participation in India's freedom struggle. She was later arrested by British forces during the INA campaign.
After Independence, Sahgal continued to devote herself to social service and worked as a doctor in Kanpur, treating poor and underprivileged patients for several decades.
She joined the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in 1971 and remained active in social and political movements, particularly those concerning women's rights, equality and social justice.
In recognition of her contribution, she was awarded the Padma Vibhushan, India's second-highest civilian honour, in 1998. She also contested the presidential election in 2002.
Sahgal died in Kanpur on July 23, 2012, at the age of 97.
