Former Assam Rifles land to reshape Aizawl’s road network, public spaces

Aizawl, Oct 24 (UNI) A large tract of land vacated by the Assam Rifles in the heart of Aizawl is being developed for road widening, a new bypass and public amenities, in a plan expected to
change the city’s urban landscape and ease traffic congestion.

The redevelopment plan includes a new bypass road below Lammual (formerly Assam Rifles Ground), large parking facilities, a Heritage Court and exhibition spaces. Existing buildings
will be renovated, while additional structures will be built where necessary.

The bypass road will begin near the Post Office and emerge near the BCM chapel at Saron Veng. About 17 per cent of the road construction has been completed, while road-widening work is also under way.

The project aims to make better use of the strategically located land while providing more space for public activities and improving traffic movement in the densely built-up state capital. The plan also seeks to preserve as many existing trees as possible.

Once the project is implemented, parking will no longer be allowed between Treasury Square and Bazar Bungkawn, with large designated parking areas to be developed instead. The old Army Quarter Guard building will be preserved rather than demolished.

Home Minister K. Sapdanga inspected the ongoing works on Saturday along with Land Revenue and Information & Public Relations Minister B. Lalchhanzova, officials of the Public Works Department, Public Health Engineering Department and Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Department, and the Aizawl Mayor.

Sapdanga said a comprehensive master plan had been prepared for the former Assam Rifles land and expressed satisfaction with the progress of the work. He said bad weather had slowed construction but expressed hope that the pace would pick up as rainfall subsided.

The minister said he would visit the site periodically to monitor progress.

The redevelopment is part of efforts to put the centrally located land to public use, combining improved road connectivity with parking and cultural facilities in a city where space is limited.
