INDIA Bloc to hold ‘Gyanesh Hatao, Democracy Bachao’ march in Bihar tomorrow

Patna, Oct 6 (UNI) The INDIA bloc will hold protest marches and effigy-burning programmes on Wednesday at all 534 block headquarters across Bihar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging that the Election Commission has compromised the democratic process,
RJD state spokesperson Ejaz Ahmad said here on Tuesday that the agitation would be followed by demonstrations at all district headquarters on October 8. On the same day, Leader of Opposition in Bihar and INDIA bloc leader Tejaswi Prasad Yadav will lead a march from the Shaheed Smarak near the state Secretariat to Raj Bhavan in Patna, where a memorandum will be submitted to the Governor.
The RJD leader said the INDIA bloc’s campaign was aimed at intensifying its fight to “protect democracy” in Bihar and exposing what it described as irregularities in the functioning of the Election Commission.
Earlier during the day, INDIA bloc leaders and MPs from the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha participated in a protest march in New Delhi towards the Election Commission office, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Ahmad alleged that the Election Commission was functioning in favour of the BJP and claimed that observations made by the Supreme Court regarding the poll panel’s functioning raised serious questions about its independence.
He also targeted the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, alleging that it was undertaken at the instance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union Home Minister Amit Shah. “Bihar, which is regarded as the birthplace of democracy, was made a testing ground for an attempt to weaken democratic institutions,” Ahmad alleged.
He said the INDIA bloc would continue its agitation against the “theft of people’s votes” and alleged electoral malpractice.
Ahmad further said the opposition alliance would intensify its campaign in Bihar under Tejaswi Prasad Yadav’s leadership and continue to raise questions over the functioning of the Election Commission and the conduct of the electoral process.
