West Bengal government launches GPS-enabled app to track road repairs

Kolkata, Oct 8 (UNI) The West Bengal government's urban development and municipal affairs department (UDMA) launched a GPS-enabled mobile app and web portal to digitally track road repairs across the state, requiring urban local bodies (ULBs) to photograph damaged stretches before work begins, during repairs and after completion.
The Path Nirman Mobile App and Portal launched at Nagaryan in Salt Lake on Thursday by Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul, will create a centralised digital record of road-repair works and allow authorities to monitor their progress through a web dashboard.
The system will use GPS-based location tracking to identify the precise location of repair works, while photographs uploaded at different stages will provide a visual record of the condition of roads and the work carried out.
"We want to document the condition of the roads in three stages — before the repair, while the repair work is under way and after the repair has been completed," Paul said.
The initiative comes as the state steps up efforts to repair potholes and damaged stretches of paved roads ahead of the October 10 deadline set by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Paul said the new system would make it easier for officials to monitor repair work and maintain records across the state.
"Our supervisors are monitoring the work, and we want the entire process to be properly documented," she said while adding that rains were disrupting road repair works being carried out across the state.
The centralised dashboard will enable authorities to track the status of individual repair projects, while digital record-keeping will provide details of the work undertaken at each location. The system is also expected to help officials identify whether repairs have been completed and assess the condition of roads after the work.
Paul said the monitoring would not be restricted to roads maintained by municipal bodies.
"We are also looking at roads under different departments and agencies. If there are potholes or damaged stretches, we want those to be brought to our notice as well," she said, referring to roads under departments including irrigation and national highways.
She also urged people to flag road damage on the UDMA helpline and by notifying her on her official Facebook Page as well as the Apnar Sarkar Apnar Pashe app and said that the photographs would help authorities identify areas requiring intervention.
The number of the UDMA department's grievance cell is: 1800 345 0938
"Road repairs have been delayed due to a technical glitch in our e-tender system as well as the rains. However, we are hopeful to compete the repairs by October 10-12," Paul said. UNI SEN AAB NST CDS
