Jharkhand: BJP, Congress spar over Jamshedpur firing

Ranchi, Sep 27 (UNI) The BJP and Congress in Jharkhand on Sunday traded allegations over the law-and-order situation following the firing incident in Jamshedpur.
Leader of Opposition Babulal Marandi questioned the state government's handling of law and order following the firing at a restaurant in Bindal Mall in Jamshedpur on Saturday.
Marandi, in a post on social media, alleged that the incident reflected deterioration in the law-and-order situation and raised questions over the functioning and postings of senior police officers.
He alleged that political considerations were influencing appointments to senior police positions in the state and questioned the rationale behind several officers holding additional charges.
Marandi also sought details of the basis for allocation of additional charges among senior police officers and alleged that some officers had been sidelined while others held multiple responsibilities.
He further alleged that complaints relating to coal smuggling, illegal earnings and protection of illegal activities involving certain officers had not been independently investigated. These allegations were made by Marandi and were not independently established.
The BJP leader also questioned the utilisation of senior officers posted in the CID and sought details of the officers assigned to major investigations, including those related to recruitment examinations.
Reacting to Marandi's remarks, Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee media in-charge Rakesh Sinha said the Jamshedpur firing was a serious incident and the government should take action against those responsible.
Sinha, however, said every criminal incident should not be turned into a political issue and asked Marandi to provide evidence for the allegations made against police officers and the administration.
He also questioned Marandi about the law-and-order record during his tenure as chief minister and said the Opposition leader should make public the basis and documents supporting his allegations.
Sinha said the government should ensure the identification and arrest of those involved in the Jamshedpur firing and investigate whether anyone had provided protection to the accused.
He said action in criminal cases should be based on evidence and law rather than political statements.
The firing took place at a restaurant in Bindal Mall under Sonari police station in Jamshedpur on Saturday. Police launched an investigation and examined CCTV footage following the incident.
A police-based report said four people were injured and a Special Investigation Team headed by the city SP was formed to investigate the case.
