No merger negotiations between NPP and BJP, says Meghalaya Dy CM Sniawbhalang Dhar

Shillong, Sep 26 (UNI) Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister and senior National People's Party (NPP) leader Sniawbhalang Dhar on Saturday rubbished claims that some party legislators are in New Delhi holding negotiations to switch over to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
“I want to clarify from my side that there is nothing wrong within the NPP family. All the 33 legislators of the NPP are intact and united,” Dhar, who is also the NPP National Vice President, said.
Dhar added that his recent visit to New Delhi, alongside Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home Prestone Tynsong, was strictly for official work.
Dismissing media reports claiming that 22 NPP legislators are camping in New Delhi to meet central BJP leaders, he said, “I am telling you that only three NPP legislators were in Delhi for official work. I feel pity for those media outlets who put such posts on social media. People will laugh at them as all 33 NPP legislators are intact and fully united.”
Refuting reports of his own rumored move to join the saffron party after eight legislators of the United Democratic Party (UDP) recently shifted allegiance, the Nartiang MLA said, “I have to respect the mandate of the people who have elected me to the Assembly as an NPP candidate.
"Honestly, I belong to the NPP and I will continue to be with NPP only. Therefore, the question of switching to any party does not arise. I cannot betray my people of Nartiang constituency and the people of Meghalaya.”

Regarding the UDP legislators joining the BJP, Dhar declined to comment further, stating it was an internal matter between those two political parties.
“However, every political party would want to strengthen its own team and there is no harm in it,” he added, maintaining that the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition remains strong despite the recent political developments.
The NPP-led MDA government comprises the NPP (33), BJP (10), and UDP (four), besides two legislators each from the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) and Independents.
The opposition consists of All India Trinamool Congress (five) and the Voice of the People Party (four).
