Meghalaya Power Minister Metbah Lyngdoh resigns after exodus of 11 UDP party legislators

Raymond Kharmujai
Shillong, Oct 31 (UNI) Meghalaya Power Minister and United Democratic Party (UDP) President Metbah Lyngdoh resigned from the Conrad Sangma-led ministry on Saturday.
“I have tendered my resignation to the Chief Minister after assessing the prevailing political situation and the recent political developments within the UDP,” Lyngdoh told UNI.
However, it is not known if the Chief Minister has accepted Lyngdoh’s resignation.
Lyngdoh said the decision was taken during an emergency meeting of the UDP's Central Executive Committee (CEC) at the party headquarters on Saturday evening.
When asked if the UDP intends to sever ties with the ruling NPP, the party president said: “We at the CEC deliberated at length on the prevailing political developments in the state and the exit of our 11 party legislators to other political parties.
"The CEC will continue to discuss and determine our next course of action.”

The UDP, which won 12 seats in the 2023 assembly elections, suffered its worst setback since its formation in 1997; it has now been reduced to a single-digit presence in the 60-member Meghalaya assembly, with Lyngdoh now being the sole remaining legislator.
Of the 12 UDP legislators, eight joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on 23 September in New Delhi, while three others switched over to the NPP.
The NPP has consolidated its dominance by securing 36 members—well past the halfway threshold of 31—while the BJP has claimed the spot of the second largest legislative party with 10 seats, replacing the UDP.
Both the BJP and UDP remain constituents in the NPP-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.
