Odisha CM urges Naveen Patnaik to offer constructive suggestions on Kotia dispute, warns against political gains

Bhubaneswar, Oct 27 (UNI): Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Tuesday urged Leader of the Opposition Naveen Patnaik to come forward with constructive suggestions and possible solutions to address the long-standing territorial dispute over the Kotia region between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, stressing that the sensitive inter-state issue should not be used for political gains.
In a letter to Patnaik, a copy of which was released to the press, Majhi said the cluster of villages in Kotia under Koraput district had been an inseparable part of Odisha since the formation of the separate province in 1936.
Responding to Patnaik’s letter on the issue, Majhi stressed that the sensitive inter-state dispute should be approached with restraint, responsibility and respect for the judicial process rather than being turned into an opportunity for political gains.
The Chief Minister asserted that there would be no compromise on safeguarding Odisha’s geographical integrity and protecting the legitimate interests of its people.
Majhi said his government had consistently upheld the state's territorial interests through lawful and constitutional means. At the same time, it had accorded priority to the development of Kotia and adjoining areas, with a focus on ensuring inclusive growth, improving public service delivery and enhancing the well-being of local residents.
He said a committee headed by the Revenue and Disaster Management Minister, comprising senior officials, had been constituted to oversee the integrated development of the Kotia Gram Panchayat areas.
The Revenue Minister, along with other ministers and officials, had also been visiting the region to assess local development needs and facilitate coordinated action for its overall progress, Majhi added.
Emphasising the need for a constructive approach, the Chief Minister said the government would sincerely consider any constitutional and practical proposals put forward in the larger interest of Odisha.
Majhi reiterated that the Kotia dispute was a sensitive inter-state matter requiring responsibility, restraint and respect for the judicial process. He called for constructive engagement to protect the state's territorial interests and ensure the development and welfare of people living in the region.
