TMC's Kalyan Banerjee accuses Bengal govt of using police to ‘intimidate’ rivals

Krishnagar, Sep 19 (UNI) Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the West Bengal government, alleging that the police were being used to intimidate party workers and candidates amid mounting political tension over the upcoming bypolls.
Speaking to reporters at Thakurbari in Santipur, Nadia, Banerjee alleged that police were threatening party workers in different parts of the state, including Rejinagar, and claimed that the government was using cases and arrests to suppress its political opponents.
“There is a goonda Chief Minister in West Bengal who is using the police to frighten people everywhere,” Banerjee alleged, while assuring party workers in Rejinagar that the Trinamool candidate was continuing the fight and that there was no reason to panic.
The Serampore MP also trained his guns on Chief Minister and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari while referring to the political history of Nandigram.
Questioning Adhikari’s association with the Nandigram land movement, Banerjee said it was “baseless” to link him with the historic agitation. He further alleged that the state government was deliberately filing cases and ordering arrests against Opposition leaders and workers as part of an attempt to weaken political resistance.
Banerjee also accused the police of being used to manipulate the electoral process and alleged that attempts were being made to retain power through “vote rigging” and the misuse of the police.
“We will not tolerate police atrocities against our workers,” he said, warning that the party would resist any attempt to intimidate its cadres.
His remarks came against the backdrop of heightened political activity surrounding the October 6 bypolls in Nandigram and Rejinagar, with allegations and counter-allegations between rival parties intensifying across the state.
