Bengal: Manish Shukla’s father alleges death threats after political row

Kolkata, Oct 29 (UNI) Chandramani Shukla, father of slain BJP leader Manish Shukla, has alleged that he received death threats over phone calls and WhatsApp messages following a political controversy involving Bengal BJP leader Kaustav Bagchi.
He has lodged a complaint with Khardah police station and informed senior BJP leaders about the matter.
Chandramani, a senior doctor, alleged that the threats began after he held a press conference on Monday criticising Bagchi. According to him, a person identifying himself as Aravinda Pal contacted him through internet calls and WhatsApp, claiming to be calling from Germany.
However, Chandramani suspects that local criminals may be behind the threats rather than someone operating from Germany.
“The messages accused me of doing politics over my son’s dead body. I was also threatened with dire consequences, including being killed, if I continued to associate with party leader Santosh Singh,” Chandramani alleged.
The threats have left the elderly doctor concerned about his personal safety.
The controversy follows a political row over the possible induction of two leaders, Uttam Das, former chairman of the Barrackpore municipality, and Prashanta Chowdhury, former chairman of the Titagarh municipality, into the BJP. Both were recently seen on a BJP platform, triggering criticism from Bagchi.
Manish Shukla was shot dead at point-blank range outside the BJP office in Titagarh in 2020. The murder sent shockwaves through the political establishment. The investigation pointed towards an alleged contract killing, with the names of Uttam Das and Prashanta Chowdhury emerging in connection with the case.
Bagchi recently held a Press conference alleging that the two leaders had escaped punishment while they were associated with the ruling camp. He also threatened to commit suicide if they joined the BJP.
In response, Chandramani held a Press conference accusing Bagchi of exploiting his son's name for political gains. He claimed that anyone seeking to pursue politics in Barrackpore needed Manish's name. He also alleged that Bagchi had declined to fight his son's murder case when approached earlier.
Chandramani suspects the threats followed his public criticism of Bagchi.
