Sukanta Majumdar attacks Trinamul over bypoll withdrawals

Kolkata, Sep 19 (UNI) union Minister and BJP leader Sukanta Majumdar launched a sharp attack
on the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamul Congress over the withdrawal of its candidates from the upcoming Nandigram and Rejinagar bypolls, saying the party's "expiry date" had passed.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Rozgar Mela at the National Library in Kolkata on Saturday, Majumdar also claimed that the BJP could have attacked Trinamul offices but chose
not to do so, saying his party did not believe in such a political culture.
"We could have demolished all the Trinamul party offices, the way she (Mamata Banerjee) did," Majumdar said, referring to alleged attacks on BJP offices during Trinamul's tenure in power.
He also alleged that a BJP office in Bhabanipur, Banerjee's assembly constituency, was set on fire after the 2021 Assembly elections.
On the withdrawal of Trinamul candidates from the bypolls, Majumdar said the party's "expiry date" had passed.
Trinamul candidate Sanchita Pradhan De withdrew her nomination from Nandigram on Friday after meeting Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The Trinamul leadership subsequently announced support for the Congress candidate in the constituency, citing the need to strengthen the INDIA bloc at the national level.
Majumdar also commented on allegations of administrative pressure and intimidation surrounding the Rejinagar seat.
Referring to the arrest of Congress candidate Milan Pradhan, he said several cases had been registered against him and that the court would decide whether he was entitled to bail
depending on the seriousness of the allegations.
"Till now, when Congress workers were beaten up and bombs were hurled at them, not a single
word came from Rahul Gandhi. Now Rahul Gandhi is speaking. All these days he had been quietly listening to Mamata Banerjee's words of affection," Majumdar said.
On the dispute over the Trinamul Congress election symbol, Majumdar defended the Election Commission's decision to freeze the symbol after rival factions staked claim to it.
"There cannot be two claimants using the same symbol. The twin flowers cannot be torn apart and given to two people," he said, referring to Trinamul's twin-flower symbol.
The union minister also expressed confidence that the BJP would win both the Nandigram and Rejinagar bypolls.
The bypolls are scheduled for October 6, with counting due on October 9. Saturday is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
