Bamboo holds potential to strengthen rural economy, livelihoods: Odisha Minister

Bhubaneswar, Sep 19 (UNI) Bamboo has the potential to generate rural livelihoods and support a green economy, Odisha Forest, Environment and Climate Change Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia said on World Bamboo Day.
The Odisha Bamboo Development Agency (OBDA) observed World Bamboo Day 2026 on Friday, with Singkhuntia highlighting bamboo's applications in construction, furniture, handicrafts, packaging and food products.
A Bamboo Haat at Anandaban, developed under the Odisha Forestry Sector Development Society, was inaugurated on the occasion. It will provide a platform for artisans, entrepreneurs, self-help groups and traders to showcase and sell bamboo products.
OBDA also screened a documentary on its work in bamboo cultivation, processing, value addition, training and employment generation.
As part of the celebrations, OBDA organised the Bamboo Product Innovation Competition 2026 at Anandaban on September 17 and 18, with participants from Odisha, Kerala, Assam and Delhi showcasing new products and designs.
Principal Chief Conservator of Forests and Head of Forest Force K Murugesan, KONBAC Director Sanjeev Karpe and OBDA State Mission Director Karthik V were among those present.
