Deep depression likely to bring more rain than wind to Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 23 (UNI) The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal is likely to bring more impact from rainfall than strong winds as it moves slowly towards landfall near Kalingapatnam tonight, the MET office said on Wednesday.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Alipore, the system slowed down further today and was moving at 5 kmph, compared with its earlier speed of 18 kmph on the day it formed on Monday. The IMD said the system was about 60 km southeast of Kalingapatnam at 8.30 am on Wednesday and was likely to cross the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, by night.
Till around 11.30 am, the deep depression had reached around 50 km from Kalingapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, moving at a slower speed. After entering land, the direction of the system is likely to change. “In the Bay of Bengal, its tilt was mainly towards the north-northwest. After hitting land, its track is expected to be largely westwards,” an official of the RMC said.
