Bengal: Eastern Railway seeks consultancy plan to transform Howrah station into multi-modal hub

Kolkata, Oct 2 (UNI) The Eastern Railway (ER) has invited bids for consultancy services to prepare a feasibility plan for the redevelopment of Howrah Station and its surrounding areas, with a focus on integrating the historic railway terminal with multiple modes of transport.
Howrah divisional railway manager Vishal Kapoor said the authorities were examining ways to upgrade both the station and the area around it. The proposal comes amid plans for a multi-storey complex, a skywalk linking the structure with the station and the improvement of two existing subways.
The Eastern Railway and the state government have been holding discussions on the proposed redevelopment. Kapoor said the objective was to look beyond the station as a standalone railway facility and develop it as a multi-modal passenger transport complex.
“We are not looking at Howrah as a static thing in history but to develop it as a multi-modal passenger transportation complex,” Kapoor said at a press conference.
He said several high-level meetings had already taken place with the state government, with another scheduled for Thursday.
Kapoor said the consultancy would examine how the station could be integrated with the different forms of transport that converge on Howrah. Eight streams of traffic, including taxis and ferry services, currently feed into the station area.
“We are looking at how to develop the area. A tender was issued yesterday to institute a major consultancy,” he said, and informed that the study would focus on three aspects of how the railway station could interact with other modes of transport and evolve into a comprehensive multi-modal complex.
The proposed plan will also examine how such a transport hub could be connected with the wider city. “It is not an isolated place,” Kapoor said, mentioning that an integrated plan would have to consider the interaction between the Railways, other transport systems and the city before redevelopment work could begin.
Meanwhile, the Howrah division has launched a dedicated drive to collect e-waste during October, with a target of gathering around 25 tonnes.
The initiative follows waste collection and segregation activities undertaken during Swachhata Pakhwada. Kapoor stated the division aims to become e-waste-free by the end of the month, with the collected material to be segregated and auctioned in accordance with waste management rules.
The division is also focusing on disposing of accumulated railway scrap during the month. Kapoor said it has set a target of clearing scrap worth around Rs 8 crore.
“Beyond that is e-waste. This is for the first time that a concerted effort only for e-waste would be made,” he said, adding that the division would work with various agencies to ensure that the collected e-waste is recycled. UNI NN NST
