Trinamool retains Kaliganj assembly seat, party wins by record margin

Kolkata, June 23 (UNI) The West Bengal ruling Trinamool Congress headed by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's electoral success continues to frustrate the Opposition, including the BJP, as her party candidate Alifa Khatun won the Kaliganj assembly bypoll in Nadia district on Monday by a record margin of over half a lakh votes over the nearest BJP rival.
The election office said while the 28-year-old winner secured 1,02,179 votes, her closest opponent BJP's Ashish Ghosh got 52, 424 votes and Congress candidate supported by the Left Front got only 28,262 votes in the June 19 bypoll where some 73 per cent voters of the total over 2.5 lakh electors turned up at polling booths.
Alifa Ahmed broke her father Nasiruddin Ahmed's winning margin of 47,000 in the 2021 assembly polls.
The state is scheduled to go to a poll for 294 seats in the next eight to nine months.
Banerjee congratulated the voters of Kaliganj assembly constituency for mandating her party candidate. Banerjee in a message greeted all the people of different faiths, caste and creed of the Kaliganj assembly constituency for reposing faith in the ruling party.
She congratulated the party workers and also dedicated her party's win to 'Ma Mati and Manush'.
The bypoll was necessitated by the death of sitting TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahmed.
Meanwhile, a pall of gloom descended in the Kaliganj after the news spread that a teenager was killed in an explosion allegedly while a group of miscreants was celebrating the victory of the TMC candidate.
Tamanna Khatun (10), a class 4 student was killed while she was proceeding with her mother for a bath to a nearby pond and caught in the wild celebration.
Police said they were investigating the unnatural death in the explosion and arrested a suspect.
The ECI has sought a report from the Nadia district administration about the "powerful" explosion.
The Chief Minister expressed deep shock and sadness over the death of the girl and said the administration will take action and arrest the culprits.
Union minister Sukanta Majumdar said: "Yes, bombs. Not speeches, not sweets -- bombs were thrown in the name of 'victory' in a bypoll." He said a minor girl was blown to death even before counting ended in Kaliganj.
" Only @MamataOfficial’s Bengal can an election celebration look like a terrorist attack! How brutal," Majundar, who is also the state BJP president posted on his X handle.
