Odisha: NHRC seeks fresh report on alleged abduction, gang rape of newlywed in Kendrapada

Kendrapada, Sep 29 (UNI) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought a fresh status report from the Kendrapada Superintendent of Police (SP) and the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) by October 29 on the alleged abduction and gang rape of a newly married woman, with particular focus on the progress of the investigation and victim compensation.
The Commission, after considering the police report on September 21, directed the Kendrapada SP to furnish the latest status of the investigation, including the arrest status of each accused.
The DLSA has been asked to inform the Commission whether compensation has been sanctioned or disbursed to the victim under the Victim Compensation Scheme.
The NHRC had taken cognizance of the matter on February 19, 2026, observing that the allegations were grave and warranted close monitoring.
According to the police report placed before the Commission, the 27-year-old woman was allegedly abducted from her residence on July 15, 2025, by Bikash Malik and others and taken to Hyderabad.
She was allegedly confined there and sexually assaulted during the period of her captivity.
The victim was rescued on August 5, 2025, after she managed to secretly contact her family, the report said.
The Nikirai police registered a case on August 21, 2025, under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Police informed the Commission that the accused persons were absconding and efforts were underway to apprehend them. The District Cyber Cell was also assisting in the investigation, the report said.
The NHRC has now directed the authorities to submit the fresh reports by October 29.
