No Cabinet reshuffle on the cards, says Meghalaya CM

Shillong, Oct 6 (UNI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma Tuesday brushed aside cabinet reshuffle rumours, saying the matter has not been discussed at any level.
“There has been no discussion on these lines (cabinet reshuffle), and there is no particular intention to induct any of the legislators who recently joined the BJP,” Sangma said.
Sangma maintained that the National People’s Party (NPP)-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government under his leadership remains stable.
Dismissing reports that several NPP legislators will defect to the BJP, the Chief Minister, who is also the NPP national president, said, “There’s no major concern and these are nothing but imaginations from certain sections and individuals. Let me put it to rest that this is nothing but imaginations from certain sections.”
“Certain concerns, maybe the media has created and individuals have created but let me assure the legislators, the coalition and the public at large that there is no such thought process and there is nothing of concern in this particular matter,” he said.
The media speculation began after eight legislators of United Democratic Party (UDP), one of the main regional political party in the state, defected to the BJP, making it the second-largest after the NPP in the 60-member Meghalaya Assembly.
“The NPP on its own has 33 legislators who are absolutely intact. We have our coalition partners. The overall composition may have changed between the partners but the strength of the MDA 2.0 remains the same,” he said.
On the friction between the two coalition partners the UDP and the BJP, Sangma said it was their internal matter and he would not comment on it.
He said that mistrust could have been a concern had the legislators joined parties outside the coalition or in the Opposition, but the induction was between two parties within the alliance, so no issue arises.
Brushing asides reports that the BJP was trying to split the NPP to form the government, the Chief Minister said such claims were incorrect, as the NPP enjoys an absolute majority with 33 legislators.
Sangma said the MDA coalition works in a spirit of cooperation, and that the partners share it.
“It is the spirit of working together in the coalition. Even the other political parties in the coalition have the same spirit. So the question of them also thinking in a negative manner doesn’t arise,” he said.
