Kolkata Police introduce QR code system to identify illegal fireworks

Kolkata, Nov 3 (UNI) Ahead of Diwali, customers buying fireworks in the city can scan a QR code to access a list of 1,700 authorised ‘green’ fireworks, following the development of dedicated software by the Kolkata Police Reserve Force.
The system, aimed at curbing the smuggling and sale of illegal, high-decibel fireworks ahead of Kali Puja and Diwali, will be made available at various locations across the city’s firework markets.
According to sources at Lalbazar, the QR code will help police and buyers identify counterfeit products being sold as ‘green’ fireworks. The city police have printed around 90,000 posters and leaflets in Bengali, English and Hindi for distribution across all 10 police divisions.
Police have clarified that only authorised ‘green’ fireworks, designed to be more eco-friendly and produce less noise or light, are permitted. Buyers can scan the QR code at firework markets to check whether a product features on the approved list.
The police-issued materials state that noise-emitting ‘green’ fireworks must not exceed 125 decibels when measured from a distance of four metres, while light-emitting fireworks, including sparklers and aerial displays, must remain within 90 decibels at the same distance.
To intercept the movement of illegal fireworks, police are conducting round-the-clock ‘naka’ checks in areas bordering the city. They are also keeping a close watch on firework stalls at various locations ahead of Kali Puja.
