West Bengal proposes 40 per cent waiver on fines for private bus operators

Kolkata, Oct 6 (UNI) In a major relief to private bus operators, the West Bengal Transport Department has proposed a 40 per cent waiver on fines and penalties for private and mini-bus operators.
A meeting between West Bengal Transport Minister Arjun Singh, senior police officials from the West Bengal Police, Howrah and Kolkata, and private bus operators was held on Tuesday.
According to the private bus operators, two of their long-pending demands were resolved following the meeting, which they described as a major relief.
As informed by the Transport Minister on the sidelines of the meeting, a colossal sum of Rs 1,720 crore is yet to be collected. To expedite revenue collection, the department has sent a proposal to the state Finance Department to allow a 40 per cent waiver for private bus operators. The proposal is awaiting the mandatory approval from the authorities.
"We have said that 40 per cent waiver would be allowed while the remaining 60 per cent would have to be paid. We are hopeful that the proposal from the authorities would soon be approved," Transport Minister Arjun Singh said today.
The department has also decided to increase vigilance on private buses changing routes illegally.
"We have asked the police and the Motor Vehicle Inspectors to monitor these buses that are plying illegally on changed routes. The operators would have to fix their route while obtaining permits. They cannot change it to a more profitable route later illegally," said the minister.
As informed by the minister, the state Transport Department would run an additional number of buses to cater to increased crowds during Durga Puja from Dwitiya.
