Jharkhand: Ranchi dams see rise in water levels amid heavy rain

Ranchi, Sep 26 (UNI) Heavy rain in Ranchi on Saturday raised water levels in Kanke, Getalsud and Hatia dams, prompting authorities to regulate water discharge.
Two gates of the Rukka-Getalsud dam were opened by four inches each around 8 am on Saturday after its water level reached 34.3 feet against its 36-foot capacity.
Rukka-Getalsud dam assistant engineer John Bodra said the two gates were opened by four inches each due to the rise in water level.
Bodra said this was the third time this monsoon that the gates of the Rukka-Getalsud dam had been opened.
The Kanke dam gate was also opened further on Saturday after its water level reached 28 feet. One gate, which had been kept open by four inches since Sep 23 and later reduced to two inches, was opened by six inches, Kanke dam in-charge Nagendra Kumar Singh said.
Singh said water discharge was increased from around 7 am after the dam's water level reached 28 feet.
He said this was the fourth time during the current monsoon that the Kanke dam gate had been opened.
The Hatia dam in Dhurwa also recorded a water level above 36 feet against its 39-foot capacity. The dam's junior engineer said a scrubber valve had been opened on Friday as a safety measure and to allow waste material to flow out with the water.
The engineer said the maximum height of the Hatia dam gate was 38 feet and the water level remained below the gate. The water level was being monitored continuously, he said.
The heavy rainfall followed the movement of a weather system formed after a depression over the Bay of Bengal. The system was located near northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining north Chhattisgarh at 5:30 am on Saturday and was moving northwards.
The Rukka-Getalsud dam is a major source of water supply to Ranchi and caters to nearly half of the city's population, according to the source copy.
